Enhancing Social Responsibility In Your Company
The holidays are high season for company volunteering efforts. Companies all over are participating in toy drives and serving those in need at soup kitchens. This is a great tradition, but why stop there? There are many ways you can get involved in your community and enhance your company’s social impact on a consistent basis.
The good news is that employees want to participate in company social responsibility programs. According to a study by PwC, 56% of millennials would consider leaving their company if its social responsibility program didn’t meet their expectations.
As you plan for the new year, consider making more room in your agenda for community involvement and social responsibility efforts. Read on for some ideas.
1. Align with your mission and values
There are a multitude of ways to give back and participate in your community. If you don’t know where to start, look for opportunities that align with your mission and values. Some companies have even taken it a step further by incorporating social responsibility as a value. For example, Whole Foods lists “We serve and support our local and global communities” as a core value.
2. Align with your business service
Do what you do best as a company and leverage your core business service or product in a socially responsible context. For example, a food company can partner with emergency food organizations to donate leftovers.
3. Go green
There might be everyday changes that can reduce the environmental impact of your workplace, such as recycling programs, waste reduction, and energy conservation. To maximize the effectiveness of these efforts, you need buy-in and participation from employees, so make it fun and accessible by featuring an “environmental tip of the a month.”
4. Mobilize employees through a committee
Chances are there are some employees in your company who are particularly passionate about social responsibility. Because this is an ongoing project, creating a committee that focuses on these efforts will ensure that your company takes action regularly. Further, a committee is a great way to engage employees through their interests.
5. Volunteering as a team building activity
Volunteering together can be a great team building activity. Consider establishing a regular schedule for volunteer events with your team or department. Some companies even set aside a certain amount of hours each quarter for offsite volunteer activities. Keep in mind that some nonprofit organizations require special clearance forms or additional training, so be sure to plan these group events far in advance.
6. Create a dialogue
Regularly educate employees on your social responsibility program and why it’s important to your company. Include an overview in training and communicate how employees can participate. Just like with other culture programs you implement, use surveys to gather feedback from employees and crowdsource ideas for future programs.
